There’s Nothing Better to do SSgt
Monday Morning
Every Monday morning I listen to my Marines tell stories about how they went out and got plowed. I drank half a bottle of Jack and 36 beers this weekend one guy brags. I ask them why they go out and drink all the time and time and time again I get well there’s nothing else to do.
How is this possible?
I don’t understand how a young man in Southern California can say that there is nothing better to do than to drink all weekend. Camp Pendleton is located 45 minutes North of San Diego and 30 minutes South of Anaheim. LA is just over an hour away and Las Vegas is about a 5 hour drive. There is plenty to do in Southern California besides spend the weekend drinking
Attractions
As I wrote in an earlier post Southern California is a baseball fans dream. Three ML teams within an hour and a half from the gates of Pendleton. Also there are plenty of theme parks in the area from Sea World in San Diego to Six Flags in Valencia (Northern LA area) with Disneyland, California Adventure, Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal Studios in the middle. So as you can see there is plenty of stuff you can do
But that costs money
The things mentioned above can hit the wallet pretty hard but there are ways around it. Sea World gives a free ticket to every military member (and up to 3 dependants) each and every year. Knott’s Berry Farm is free for service members and one dependant (with discounted tickets after that) during the first two weeks or so of November (Veteran’s Day timeframe). Also you can visit ITT and receive discounts to many attractions throughout the area.
Free
If that still is too expensive there are plenty of things to do around here that are free. There are miles upon miles of beautiful beaches to go to. The world famous San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park are free to active duty service members every time you go. You can tour the USS Midway in the San Diego Bay for free.
So as you can see while stationed aboard Camp Pendleton there is plenty of stuff that you can do in the local communities that is not all that expensive and can even be cheaper than the half a bottle of Booze and 36 beers that you are drinking every Friday and Saturday night all you have to do is get up and look around

Haha. This post is really good advice to young Marines. This reminds me of what I used to do as a young Marine. Granted, in Jacksonville NC there really isn’t much to do besides drink. Drinking gets pretty old after a while though. I hope your Marines come to appreciate the fun stuff they have access to before they have to spend some time in the desert, or worse, the East Coast.

I agree drinking does get old quick. Hopefully my guys can figure it out before I did (as an old SSgt).
