There has been talk since the early spring that a “windfall” tax should be placed on big oil due to the fact that they are making so much money.  It was first brought up by Hillary Clinton while she was still in the running for the Presidency, and has more recently been brought up by her former opponent and fellow Democrat Barack Obama.

Hillary originally wanted to repeal the 18.4 cent federal fuel tax to save consumers money at the pump.  She wanted to pay this by levying a tax against the huge profits of big oil.  Barack’s reply to that was that Hillary was trying to buy votes and that repealing the fuel tax would not save the average consumer too much (which was true).

Barack wants another round of stimulus check $1000 per couple and he too wants to use a windfall tax on big oil to pay for it.  He claims that the second round of stimulus checks would be enough to pay for the increase in fuel for 4-6 months.  Barack may be right in that $1000 would help, but why are we going to put a bandaid on a on a wound that need a tourniquet?  Sounds like he is trying to buy votes as well.

Why are the dems picking on big oil? Big Oil has made some stupid money as of late Exxon made 15.48 billion dollars last quarter or approxmately $1500 a second.  YES $1500 A SECOND.  I agree that is some crazy money but why are we just focusing on big oil?  Should we also look at Joe Bob who wins 200 million in a lottery that’s a windfall isn’t it, or how bout that guy that inherits a boatload from a great aunt?

What about Google a company that is practically printing money?  Or Visa who has also had record profits due to more people charging for what they normally would not due to increased prices across the board?  Let’s tax Bill Gates or Warren Buffet more since they are individually worth BILLIONS.

I think it is time to loose these thoughts about a “windfall tax” because there is really no way to determine who should pay it and who shouldn’t.  What these politicians need to be doing is working on getting rid of all the tax breaks that Corporate America gets, not just big oil.  Get them in there to rewrite the tax code so that there are no breaks anywhere.  Hell let’s get rid of the IRS all together and just have a straight flat tax, but I will address that idea in the future.
