The Olympics Start Today
The Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Olympics kick off in a few hours. Over the next two weeks competitors from around the world, representing their countries, will compete against each other for the right to be called the best in the world.
While I have not had the opportunity to attend an Olympic Games I have had the opportunity to attend a world wide competition with players representing their countries, the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006. That was the most electric atmosphere at a sporting event that I have ever attended.
The US will have their eyes on Michael Phelps as he tries to win more gold medals than anyone in history. Also the Men’s basketball team will look to regain world dominance that has been lost in recent years. Dara Torres, 41 years old and on her 5th Olympic team, will be competing again and has a chance to claim gold yet again.
Tyson gay the world’s fastest man will be in the blocks of the 100m dash to defend his world record. Misty May and Kerri Walsh defend thier gold on the beach volleyball court. The women’s softball team will probably dominate again and the baseball team has lots of great young players on it and hopefully they will be able to compete.
For the rest of the world every time a Chinese athlete gets out there to compete you will have to watch because they are competing on the world’s largest stage and in their own country. Grant Hackett from Australia will look to take home a couple more gold medals in the pool. The Iranians are power-lifting juggernauts and the Chinese are masters of the ping pong table.
The next two weeks will be filled with tons of excitement and cheering around the world. Needless to say there will be cinderella stories throughout the games as there are every year and a someone will lose an event in which they have never been beaten as this happens every time the Olympics come around. The Chinese, Russians, and of course the great US of A will be competing against each other for the overall medal count winners.
Good luck to all the competitors out there and GO USA!!!!!
