Keep Your Money
One of my biggest pet peeves is a Marine that cannot take care of his money. The reason for this is that I have lost too much of my or my Marines time to unscrew a Marine’s money problems. I have also seen too many Marines get into trouble with the Marine Corps for failing to pay bills and bounce checks.
I am not a financial advisor or anything like that so I do not give any advice about investing or anything like that. What I do do is recommend that they live within their means, buy cars at reputable dealers, and to make sure that they can afford the items that they do buy. I also recommend that they have a savings account with at least $1000 dollars in it for emergencies. That is the limit of my financial counseling and advice.
While personal finance is important to me and I will occasionally write an article on finance that is not my area of expertise nor do I want that to be the emphasis of my blog. If you are looking for advice on finances there are plenty of Military Money blogs out there that give good advice to military members. I read these blogs to help myself and to get more information for my Marines. I suggest you check these out if you need some tools to improve yourself:
- Semper Finance by Harvard Marine (former jarhead) is a great site that is teaching Marines on how to properly evaluate and purchase individual stocks.
- Military Money Might by Hank is an informative site that takes all aspects of military money into account and helps veterans as well as active duty members find the information they need.
- Military Financial Network run by Patrick is a good site that is full of great advice for military members and their money. Patrick also runs the website Cash Money Life which also includes a Military Money section on it.
Hopefully these site can help you get information to better your own money situations as well as the money situations of the Marines you serve with (seniors, juniors, and peers).
